Current Status and Regulations (2026)

• Mandatory Standards: The UK government has proposed that all new gas boilers sold from 2026 must be "hydrogen-ready." This ensures that as old boilers break down, they are replaced with units that won't need to be scrapped if the grid transitions to hydrogen.

• New Build Ban: Under the Future Homes Standard, gas boilers (including hydrogen-ready ones) are effectively being phased out for newly built homes in favor of heat pumps or heat networks. However, they remain a primary option for the 23 million existing homes already on the gas grid.

Cost: Major manufacturers have made a "price promise" to ensure that hydrogen-ready models cost no more than the equivalent natural gas models they replace.
